Australia’s Fair Work Commission has announced a 3.5% increase to the national minimum wage, effective from July 1, 2025. This adjustment raises the hourly rate from $24.10 to $24.95, equating to approximately $948 per week for full-time employees.
The decision aims to support around 2.6 million workers, including those in retail, hospitality, healthcare, and community services sectors. The increase comes as inflation remains steady at 2.4%, below the Reserve Bank of Australia’s target range, indicating a return to real wage growth after a period of stagnation.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese welcomed the minimum wage rise, highlighting its role in easing cost-of-living pressures for low-income earners. The Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU) also praised the move, viewing it as a necessary step toward restoring workers’ purchasing power.
However, the increase has faced criticism from some business groups. The Australian Restaurant & Café Association warned that the higher wage costs could lead to increased prices for consumers and pose challenges for small businesses already grappling with financial pressures.
The Fair Work Commission’s decision reflects a balance between supporting workers and considering the economic impact on businesses. As the new wage rates take effect in July, employers are advised to update their payroll systems accordingly to comply with the revised standards.
